Maxim Russia Doesn’t Like Gays, Except for These Gay Celebrities

maxim russia doesn't like gays except for these guysMaxim magazine’s Russian arm has “forgiven” several prominent gay male celebrities for their sexual preferences in an online article titled, “Gays We Respect.”

The article’s introduction reads, “We, men, do not consider men who love men to be men. This is the rule. But there are exceptions. There are gays who have earned our respect and the right to remain real men in our eyes.”

The “exceptions” with whom Maxim Russia is okay includes British actors Stephen Fry and Ian McKellen, singer Freddie Mercury, writer Oscar Wilde and American celebrity Neil Patrick Harris.

The magazine’s editor told BuzzFeed, “our position is clearly formulated in the introduction to the article.”

However, a spokesperson for Maxim in the United States told the website they were “deeply disturbed by the article in Maxim Russia and fully condemn it.”

Perhaps the most entertaining entry in the article’s list is Harris, of whom Maxim Russia writes, “We weren’t sure about including Neil Patrick Harris in the list — after all, he declared himself a “happy gay” in 2006. But his performance as Barney Stinson in the series How I Met Your Mother hasn’t left us indifferent.”

Whether or not Maxim Russia realizes that Stinson, his faux book The Bro Code and other aspects of the character are fictional.
