On CNN’s The Lead Thursday afternoon, White House advisor Dan Pfeiffer told Jake Tapper that the Obama administration does not want to negotiate with “people with a bomb strapped to their chest,” referring to Republicans. Mediaite’s Noah Rothman joined radio host Hugh Hewitt to react to that rather out-there comparison, observing that whereas a few years ago, this would have been shocking, now it’s just yet another outlandish piece of hyperbole that’s just “par for the course now.”
Hewitt asked, “What’s next? Boehner is Assad and Ted Cruz is the Nairboi Westgate mall shooters?” Rothman figured that this time around, the White House it trying to “concede as little as they possibly can,” and although this may be a “pox on both their houses” moment, the media has mainly been focused on Republicans being to blame for the potential “armageddon” that ensues if the debt ceiling is not raised.
Hewitt and Rothman agreed that Republicans should have gotten ahead of this and denounced Pfeiffer’s remarks as soon as possible.
