Michael Shannon, an icon in the arena of not giving a fuck, watched The Shape of Water win the Best Picture Oscar from the confines of a bar in Chicago — with the television on mute.

Shannon starred in the movie, but he chose not to join director Guillermo Del Toro and the rest of the cast take the stage at the the Oscars to claim the night’s big award.

Instead, Shannon, who is currently in Chicago directing a production of Brett Neveu’s Traitor at A Red Orchid Theatre, watched the awards show at a nearby bar — over a pint and with the television on mute.

According to AV Club, Shannon watched the show at The Old Town Ale House, “a favored haunt of Chicago’s theater and comedy communities,” just a short walk from the theatre.

The owner of the bar — who is also responsible for the nude portrait of Sarah Palin hanging in his establishment — posted this photo of Shannon to Twitter, revealing the actor has been growing a majestic mustache:

“Of course the juke box was rocking,

and the beer flowing,” the owner tweeted. “Where else would you want to spend Oscar night?”

Per AV Club, “Shannon’s been a member of A Red Orchid since its inception in 1993, and remains dedicated to the ensemble that got him his start, coming back regularly to appear in and direct plays there.”

Shannon plays Richard Strickland in The Shape of Water, a United States Colonel charged with examining the fish man who ends up sleeping with a mute cleaner at a secret government laboratory, played by Sally Hawkins.
