You might think that slogans on t-shirts or buttons or bumper stickers are an old-school sort of activism, but consider this: If you stick that t-shirt or button or bumper sticker on a popular social media account, you can combine new and old to fling that message of yours far and wide.
Miley Cyrus knows this. With 30 million Twitter followers and 45.6 million on Instagram, she has figured out how to command attention and then use it to support causes she cares about. A few weeks ago, she used her social media profiles to heavily promote a t-shirt she made in collaboration with Marc Jabocs, the proceeds of which went to benefit Planned Parenthood.
Now, she has turned her attention (and her followers’ attention) to the Human Rights Campaign.
She’s wearing one of their “Make America Gay Again” shirts in her latest selfie. Obviously, that’s a variation on Donald Trump‘s “Make America Great Again” logo. HRC has been selling the shirts with the promise that “100% of every purchase goes to HRC’s fight for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer equality.”
Cyrus has long supported LGBT causes. Last year, she launched the Happy Hippie Foundation to benefit homeless LGBT youth.
No word on how Trump feels about HRC co-opting his slogan, but we do know how he feels about Cyrus’ twerking, so let’s revisit that.
