More Than 100,000 Navy Sailors Had Their Social Security Numbers Hacked
The US Navy stated that a large number of current and former sailors had their social security numbers accessed by hackers.
According to Reuters, 134,386 people had their personal information breached due to a laptop being stolen.
It said a laptop used by a Hewlett Packard Enterprise Services employee working on a U.S. Navycontract was hacked. Hewlett Packard informed the Navy of the breach on Oct. 27 and the affected sailors will be notified in the coming weeks, the Navy said.
“The Navy takes this incident extremely seriously – this is a matter of trust for our sailors,” Chief of Naval Personnel Vice Admiral Robert Burke said in a statement.
So far, it doesn’t appear that the information has been used for gain, per the Navy. At the same end, the investigation is in its beginnings.
Throughout the presidential campaign, hackers accessed and released information from the Democratic National Committee and the email accounts of Hillary Clinton ally John Podesta, as well as former Secretary of State Colin Powell.
