MSNBC’s Ali Velshi Tears Into Trump For Saying He Could Run Mueller Probe: That’s ‘King-Like’ Power

President Donald Trump, in a new interview with Reuters, made this eyebrow-raising comment pertaining to special counsel Robert Mueller:

“I’ve decided to stay out. Now, I don’t have to stay out, as you know. I can go in and I could… do whatever, I could run it if I want.”

Yes, the president is now on the record saying he could lead an investigation into himself.

That concept did not sit well with Ali Velshi — who relayed the president’s remarks on MSNBC Monday night while sitting in for Ari Melber on The Beat.

“If the president is talking about the exercise of king-like powers, he’s just crossed a line here and said ‘I could run the investigation into myself if I wanted to,'” Velshi said. “That sends a chill down our Republican spines.”

Ultimately, the MSNBC host questioned whether the comment was ultimately meant to distract — just as, in his opinion, last week’s decision to revoke former CIA director John Brennan‘s security clearance was meant to divert attention from the splashy claims in the book written by Omarosa Manigault Newman.

“He has a bag of tricks that are meant to be distracting Americans,” Velshi said. “But increasingly, we’re now talking about things in which he’s working around established principles and established norms.”
