NatSec Reporter Allegedly Had ‘Closely Collaborative Relationship’ with CIA
A report from The Intercept this week uncovers emails showing what appears to be a “closely collaborative relationship” between national security reporter Ken Dilanian and the CIA. The Intercept obtained these emails after making FOIA requests for records on CIA interactions with reporters.
The Intercept report frames these emails as overly pleasant and not-at-all challenging to the CIA at all. In one instance, Dilanian sent a draft of a report he was working on to the CIA and asked, “Does this look better?” He also says in another email to the CIA that he wanted to report something “reassuring to the public” about drone strikes.
Dilanian currently works for the Associated Press, and the AP provided this statement about the emails to the L.A. Times:
“We were satisfied that any pre-publication exchanges that Ken had with the CIA before joining AP were in pursuit of accuracy in his reporting on intelligence matters.”
Dilanian did not comment publicly about the controversy, but he did retweet the statement from above.
