Nevada GOP Speaker-Elect Steps Down after Racist, Homophobic Views Exposed
Ira Hansen (R), the Nevada legislature’s Speaker-Elect, stepped down Sunday following an article in the Reno News and Review Thursday that detailed a slew of fringe racist and homophobic opinions.
Calling the article a “carefully orchestrated attack to remove a conservative Republican from a major leadership role in State government,” Hansen said he nonetheless needed to relinquish his leadership position for “the greater good of the State of Nevada.”
“I have already served two terms as an Assemblyman without any of these vicious attacks,” Hansen wrote in an email to Republican caucus members and obtained by Jon Ralston. “It was only when I had risen to leadership that this smear campaign occurred. That is the real reason for this and it is vital the public understands that.”
Hansen’s published opinions alleged the Clinton’s involvement in the Oklahoma City bombing, that all homosexual men are child molesters, that Democrats are bringing back slavery, and so forth. There’s plenty of good stuff about Martin Luther King, Jr., too.
