Sen. Frank Lautenberg, the oldest member of the Senate, died overnight of viral pneumonia, according to his office. The Democrat from New Jersey was 89. He was first elected to the Senate in 1982.
Lautenberg, who was the longest-serving senator in the state’s history and the last World War II veteran in the Senate, has suffered from health problems since last year. As The Record reported, he “missed several weeks of votes because of what he said was flu and bronchitis.”
The senator had announced he would not seek re-election in 2014.
