Newly Elected Mayor of Juneau, Alaska Found Dead in Home

Screen Shot 2015-12-01 at 3.01.34 AMGreg Fisk, the 70-year-old man who was just elected mayor of Juneau, Alaska last month was found dead in his home on Monday after police received a 911 call at 3:34 p.m. local time.

While a police spokesperson gave some comment on the discovery of Fisk’s body, she would not elaborate on any of the circumstance or cause of death. An emergency call was placed to local police on Monday afternoon by an unidentified man.

The Juneau Deputy Mayor Mary Becker will serve as interim Mayor until a proper course of action is determined. Becker said Monday, “It’s a devastating event. He was a great person and he will be missed.”

Fisk ousted the incumbent mayor of Juneau Merrill Sanford on October 6 after raking in an unexpected 66% of the total vote. After defeating Sanford, who served as Mayor for three years, Fisk himself admitted, “I’m pretty astounded.” The community of Juneau is remembering Fisk as a longtime fisherman and proud Alaskan resident; NBC News reported that Fisk additionally served in the Alaskan commerce department and was a civic activist as well.
