Ryan Ferguson left prison tonight after his murder sentence was overturned by an appeals court, and after he was released a free man he held a press conference to talk about his experience, thank people for their support, and address the issue of wrongful convictions in the American justice system.
He said, “To get charged for a crime you didn’t commit, it’s incredibly easy, and you can lose your life very fast, but to get out of prison, it takes an army.”
Ferguson said he wants to be an advocate for other wrongly convicted people and help them get their sentences overturned, starting with Charles Erickson, his friend and the man whose testimony helped convict him in the first place. Ferguson said Erickson was “used and manipulated,” and he “does not belong in prison.”
He also said the first food he wants now that he’s out is some Dairy Queen.
