The New Jersey legislature is currently investigating the “BridgeGate” scandal, and one of the assemblymen spearheading the investigation told NBC News that if Christie is found to be involved in the George Washington Bridge lane closures in any way whatsoever, impeachment gets put on the table right away.
Christie has vehemently denied direct knowledge of the bridge scandal, and has already gotten credit in the media for that “ballsy move” (though his adamant denials made Jay Leno think he seems way more presidential now). But some people haven’t been buying Christie’s denials, and if it turns out the governor was involved, the dreaded “I-word” will come into play.
“Using the George Washington Bridge, a public resource, to exact a political vendetta, is a crime,” New Jersey Assemblyman John Wisniewski, who is spearheading the bridge probe, told NBC News on Saturday. “Having people use their official position to have a political game is a crime. So if those tie back to the governor in any way, it clearly becomes an impeachable offense.”
One columnist for The Star-Ledger, New Jersey’s bigger newspaper, also floated that possibility, while Alan Dershowitz said on CNN this week that Christie should “lawyer up” and prepare for criminal prosecution.
