A 30-year-old African-American man was shot and brought to the hospital after trying to attack an NYPD officer with a hammer, and Bill Bratton says that they released the video so quickly to rebut a “cops kill another black man again” narrative.
The NYPD commissioner was on AM 970 this morning and said, according to Capital New York, that people people started tweeting that following the shooting, and “we are dealing with that, where anybody with a thumb can try to rule the airwaves.”
Bratton said that’s why they put out the video quickly, because “it takes a lot of work to push back.”
When asked about the use of body cameras, the commissioner argued, “We’re going to come to rely on them too much, I think—that the idea is the only time you can believe a cop if there’s a camera.”
