The New York Times has released another major report tonight stating Donald Trump Jr. was told that his meeting with a Russian lawyer last year was part of a Kremlin effort to help his father’s campaign.
The report states Trump Jr. was informed about this in an email he received from same music publicist who set up his meeting with Natalia Veselnitskaya. Three sources who knew about the email say the damaging information that was promised about Hillary Clinton was sourced from the Russian government itself.
From the Times:
Mr. Goldstone’s message, as described to The New York Times by the three people, indicates that the Russian government was the source of the potentially damaging information. It does not elaborate on the wider effort by Moscow to help the Trump campaign. There is no evidence to suggest that the promised damaging information was related to Russian government computer hacking that led to the release of thousands of Democratic National Committee emails.
The Times also got a response from Trump Jr.’s lawyer:
“Robert Goldstone contacted Don Jr. in an email and suggested that people had information concerning alleged wrongdoing by Democratic Party front-runner, Hillary Clinton, in her dealings with Russia…Don Jr.’s takeaway from this communication was that someone had information potentially helpful to the campaign and it was coming from someone he knew. Don Jr. had no knowledge as to what specific information, if any, would be discussed.”
Earlier today, White House deputy spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders stated that the president’s son did not partake in any Russian collusion, and she also denounced government leakers. The president has yet to directly react to his son’s newfound relevance to the investigations into Russian meddling during the 2016 election.
The president’s son has come under enormous pressure due to his changing stories about how the meeting went, and what was his intention for participating alongside his father’s staff. Earlier today, Trump Jr. said he’d be “happy” to speak with the Senate Intelligence Committee about the story and what he knows about Russia.
