Obama Orders Review of Militarized U.S. Police
In light of events unfolding in Ferguson, MO, President Barack Obama has ordered a review of federal programs that equip local police forces with military style weapons and armor, according to the New York Times.
Several media reports have shined a light on the advanced vehicles, weaponry and armory utilized by police in Ferguson, which is currently rocked by protests and looting following the killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown.
Brown, who is black was shot dead Aug. 9 by Darren Wilson, a white police officer. Brown was unarmed at the time of the shooting and a grand jury is currently determining whether Wilson will be charged with a crime. Wilson has been in hiding since the incident.
The Times reports:
The review, coupled with proposed legislation and planned congressional hearings, opens the possibility for significant changes in Washington’s approach to arming local law enforcement agencies.
