Obama Praises OU President for ‘Quick Response’ to Racist Frat Video
In a wide-ranging interview with The Huffington Post, President Barack Obama praised University of Oklahoma President David Boren for his “quick response” to the racist chant by members of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity that was caught on video.
“The way we have to measure progress here is not, ‘is there ever going to be an incident of racism in the country?'” Obama said. “It’s, ‘how does the majority of our country respond?’ And on that front, there’s no doubt that the overwhelming number of students at the University of Oklahoma, and around the country, think that kind of behavior is deplorable and don’t accept it.”
The president also noted how far the nation has come on race relations, saying such a chant would have been more tolerable three or four decades ago.
SAE is considering legal action against the University of Oklahoma for expelling the two students involved and shutting down the fraternity’s OU chapter.
