Obama to Delay Any Action on Immigration Until After Midterms
White House officials said today that President Obama plans to delay any potential executive action on immigration until after the midterm elections. During a press conference on Friday, Obama addressed the immigration issue and said, “I’ll be making an announcement soon.”
However, that won’t be terribly soon, with all the reports today about the delay in taking action. White House officials said that Obama didn’t feel he was on any strict timeline, though they did make it clear the president wants to act by the end of the year.
And, yes, if you’re wondering, politics were actually a factor in the decision.
“The reality the president has had to weigh is that we’re in the midst of the political season, and because of the Republicans’s extreme politicization of this issue, the president believes it would be harmful to the policy itself and to the long-term prospects for comprehensive immigration reform to announce administrative action before the elections.”
