Whoopi Goldberg‘s Sister Act was a huge, huge part of the 1990s and she seems to understand her place in modern nostalgia. She recently put on her old costume for an appearance on Millennial-centric Broad City, catering specifically to those of us whose childhoods she shaped by starring in a movie we probably shouldn’t have been allowed to watch.
She really gave a gift to my generation with that cameo, but today on the View, she gave a gift to a group that is probably a little more deserving, and she did it while wearing a habit once again. The Franciscan Handmaids of the Most Pure Heart of Mary are a NYC-based convent and they’ve been around for 100 years. That’s pretty cool, considering they are one of only three all-black convents in the country.
They are beloved around the city and continue their ministry in marginalized communities, feeding over 20,000 people per year, in spite of limited access to food, cars, and other resources.
Thanks to the View (and RetailMeNot and Toyota), they now have $10,000 for food, a year’s worth of gas, and a new van, so their trips around the city to feed the needy are going to get a lot easier!
Watch above to see Sister Gertrude Lily frantically embrace Goldberg, to whom she bears a striking resemblance. Stick around for the gospel choir at the end.
