Less than 24 hours after 29 year-old Omar Mateen committed the worst mass shooting in US history, killing 50 and wounding 53 others at a nightclub in Orlando, Florida, a complex picture of his motivations continues to emerge. Mateen’s ex-wife Sitora Yusufiy, who hasn’t spoken to Mateen in seven years and divorced him in 2011, is speaking out, and says she thinks he was a “sick person” who “went crazy.” From ABC News:
The ex-wife of Orlando shooter Omar Mateen said today she was shocked by her former husband’s attack, but she recognized something deeply wrong with him years ago.
“He would be perfectly normal and happy, joking, laughing one minute — the next minute his temper… his body would just [go] totally the opposite,” Sitora Yusufiy, 27, told ABC News. “Anger, emotionally violent and that later evolved into abuse, to beating.
“After being abused and after trying to do that and see the good in him, I can honestly say this is a sick person. This was a sick person that was really confused and went crazy,” she said.
She went on to talk about Mateen’s anti-gay rage, which was evident even during their marriage, and rooted in his religious beliefs, she said.
Yusufiy also spoke at length to reporters this afternoon, explaining her family’s “rescue” of her from the marriage, and her shock at hearing the news Sunday morning. Watch the full interview above, from KUSA.
