Olympian Oscar Pistorius appeared at his bail hearing today, denying the “premeditated charge” he’s facing in the death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. Pistorius told the court that her death was unintentional — that he thought there was an intruder in his house.
In an affidavit, Pistorius said he felt vulnerable because he did not have his prosthetic legs on when he fired at the bathroom door. According to the Associated Press, Pistorius then said he realized Steenkamp was not in his bed:
“It filled me with horror and fear,” he said.
He put on his prosthetic legs, tried to kick down the door, then bashed it in with a cricket bat to find Steenkamp, 29, shot inside. He said he ran downstairs with her, but “She died in my arms.”
Pistorius apparently sobbed during hearing, during which the prosecution argued that his motive was simply to kill:
Mr. Nel, the prosecutor, however, declared: “If I arm myself, walk a distance and murder a person, that is premeditated,” he said. “The door is closed. There is no doubt. I walk seven meters and I kill.”
He added “The motive is ‘I want to kill.’ That’s it.”
The hearing will resume tomorrow morning.
