At an election night party in Pennsylvania yesterday, local Republican county chair Jim Roddey joked with an audience that he directed someone in the parking lot to a handicapped spot because he saw an Obama sticker on their car and thought they were “mentally retarded.”
Roddey spoke to a room of Republicans who were celebrating the victory of Randy Vulakovich, a state representative who won a special election to fill the seat of a state senator who was convicted earlier this year for corruption and forgery. Roddey was celebrating Vulakovich’s overwhelming victory to the cheering crowd, and told the following joke.
“There was a disappointment tonight. I was very embarrassed. I was in this parking lot and there was a man looking for a space to park, and I found a space for him. And I felt badly — he looked like he was sort of in distress. And I said, ‘Sir, here’s a place.’ And he said, ‘That’s a handicapped space.’ I said, ‘Oh I’m so sorry, I saw that Obama sticker and I thought you were mentally retarded.”
The crowd “hollered and clapped” in reaction to the joke.
