In a blistering opening monologue during Thursday evening’s edition of The Late Show, host Stephen Colbert ripped into Sen. Ted Cruz and his recent family dinner with Donald Trump.
“Hey kids, have fun at the White House because daddy’s going to be crying on the way home,” said a mocking Colbert.
The comedian was referring to the extraordinarily acrimonious race between Trump and Cruz for the Republican presidential nomination. During the campaign, Trump repeatedly called Cruz “Lyin’ Ted,” accused his father of involvement in the Kennedy assassination, and tweeted an unflattering comparison between Cruz’s wife Heidi and Melania Trump with the text, “a picture is worth a thousand words.”
Cruz, for his part, called Trump a “pathological liar,” a “narcissist,” and “utterly amoral.”
But it was all smiles earlier this week. Cruz even tweeted out an image of his two daughters with a smiling Trump in the Oval Office, and called the first couple, “warm and gracious.”

Colbert speculated about what the dinner invitation may have looked like, flashing a mock up on screen.
“You and your wife (who’s a 3 at best) are invited to dinner. Cocktail attire, please check spine at the door”
