Porn, Nazis, and More: What’s the Deal With All the NSFW Add-Ons in iOS 10?

screen-shot-2016-09-15-at-4-58-10-pmIf you’re an iPhone user, you may or may not have already upgraded to iOS 10. It has a bunch of fun features, most of which are located in the Messages app. Notably, you can send gifs to friends and stick stickers all over your messaging screen! Wheeeee!

The gifs are kind of an issue, though. It’s likely that a gif storage site like Giphy is powering the default gif search app, but it is not likely that Apple weeded through the millions of gifs contained on platforms like that to take out the questionable ones.

Earlier today, there were reports of My Little Pony porn being available to iMessengers in gif form. (Click here to see that.) Other, non-pony porn was available, too. As each new find was made public on various blogs, Apple cracked down on the reported search terms, banning them and getting rid of all the sexy gifs.

The latest discovery is Nazi imagery. There is a “heil Hitler” gif available alongside other gifs of Adolf Hitler himself.

Things like this happen when outside users upload or alter content and a company unthinkingly mines that labor. Only a few weeks ago, Facebook was in hot water over the unpleasant results that popped up when users typed “feminist” into their sticker search.

If you haven’t downloaded iOS 10 yet, definitely do it. Then, report back about what sorts of unsavory things you find.
