Jeremy Christian, the 35-year-old white supremacist accused of stabbing two men to death on a train in Portland after they attempted to stop what witnesses described as Christian’s hateful anti-Muslim comments, appeared in court earlier today.
Hauled in by the authorities and behind the safety of a large, glass cage, Christian shouted:
“Free speech or die, Portland. You got no safe place. This is America. Get out if you don’t like free speech. You call it terrorism, I call it patriotism. You hear me? Die.”
The self-described white nationalist shouted racial and religious slurs at two young women aboard the Portland MAX train last Friday.
Three men–Rick Best, Taliesin Myrddin Namkai-Meche and Micah David-Cole Fletcher–intervened in the middle of Christian’s Islamophobic tirade. Best and Namkai-Meche were killed; Fletcher is currently recovering from a large stab wound in his neck.
