Posters announcing a speech Thursday night by controversial Breitbart writer Milo Yiannopoulos at American University were torn off the walls and left shredded on the floor, while meanwhile flyers touting “Practices for Creating a More Inclusive AU” were allowed to stand.
“Any viewpoint that doesn’t align with the popular view gets silenced and ridiculed,” Dan Savickas told Campus Reform. Savickas is treasurer of the Young Americans for Liberty, which invited Yiannopoulos to speak on campus.
Nobody has claimed credit for the vandalization but a Facebook event to protest the lecture decries that the university “is providing a speaking platform to a man who has publicly advocated for the beheading of trans women, believes that ‘equality and diversity departments should only hire rich, straight white men,’ and claims that rape culture is a myth would suggest otherwise.”
Yiannopoulos has faced often-virulent opposition throughout his “Dangerous Faggot” campus speaking tour, such as rowdy protesters demanding that “free speech has got to go” at the University of Minnesota and Rutgers University students who smeared themselves with fake blood to make a statement that remains unclear.
“I don’t think the leftists here have any intention of letting us hear what Milo has to say, any more than they want to let us keep up our ads,” Savickas told Campus Reform. “I’m fully expecting chaos tomorrow at the event, [but] I’m trusting that AU Police will keep it somewhat under control.”
