Rapper J. Cole Releases New Song in Tribute to Michael Brown
Rapper J. Cole has been particularly disturbed by the events of the past week in Ferguson, Missouri, and early today he put out a new song, “Be Free,” as a tribute to shooting victim Michael Brown.
Cole, clearly angry about the situation, tweeted this out on Wednesday:
STOP FUCKIN KILLIN US
— J. Cole (@JColeNC) August 13, 2014
Cole released the new song on SoundCloud today, with this description:
Rest in Peace to Michael Brown and to every young black man murdered in America, whether by the hands of white or black. I pray that one day the world will be filled with peace and rid of injustice. Only then will we all Be Free – Cole
The lyrics evoke images of black men being gunned down by police, and he sings, “There ain’t no gun they can make that could kill my soul!” The song also mixes in some audio from news reports about the shooting.
