REPORT: Trump to Announce SCOTUS Nominee Next Week, Leaning Towards Neil Gorsuch

Neil GorsuchAccording to multiple reports, Donald Trump is getting closer to naming his first Supreme Court nominee next week and is leading towards 10th Circuit judge Neil Gorsuch.

CBS’s Jan Crawford reported over the weekend that Gorsuch was leading candidate, reporting that was carefully phrased to avoid saying he was the leading candidate. But no matter, ABC’s Jon Karl reports Tuesday morning that his sources say Gorsuch is indeed the leading candidate and Trump’s announcement will come sometime next week.

Gorsuch, while certainly a judicial conservative, is largely seen as a safe choice compared to other potential Trump nominees. He passed Senate confirmation in 2006 on a voice vote, indicating no opposition. The nonpartisan SCOTUSblog notes “his background is filled with sterling legal and academic credentials,” and “He is celebrated as a keen legal thinker and a particularly incisive legal writer, with a flair that matches — or at least evokes — that of the justice whose seat he would be nominated to fill [Antonin Scalia].”
