The Associated Press is reporting that Donald Trump’s presidential transition team was informed prior to Trump’s inauguration that Michael Flynn needed to register with the Justice Department as a foreign agent prior to taking on the job of National Security Adviser.
Per the AP, this was confirmed with a White House official and a person with knowledge of the discussions between the transition lawyers and Flynn’s representatives.
This flies directly in the face of what White House press secretary Sean Spicer said yesterday at the daily press briefing, when he stated that he didn’t believe it was known by Trump that Flynn was acting as a foreign agent. (Flynn has retroactively registered as a foreign agent with DOJ.)
It was reported earlier this week that Flynn was paid over $500,000 for consulting and lobbying work for Turkey while also working for Trump’s campaign and transition team. Flynn resigned as NSA after less than a month over conversations he had with the Russian ambassador prior to the inauguration.
