Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s next move is likely to be to announce his running mate. The timing of that announcement is anyone’s guess – it could come at any point between this minute and the Republican nominating convention during the last week of August. Tea leaf-readers, however, are seeing auguries in Romney’s preparations for a bus tour starting at the end of next week. Today, Romney will attend a fundraiser in Aspen, Colorado today where he will be joined by his VP selection team and several prominent candidates.
CNN reports on Thursday that Romney will be joined in Colorado by his longtime advisor and head of his vice presidential vetting team, Beth Myers. There, Romney will meet with a number of Republican governors and will hold a public event with several of them before heading off to a fundraiser in Aspen.
One potential candidate who has showed up on a number of VP short lists, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, is already in Aspen. Also in attendance will be New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and Virginia’s Gov. Bob McDonnell.
“While the purpose of Myers’ trip is being tightly held, her presence at Romney’s side is a reminder that he could announce his running mate at any time in the coming weeks,” writes CNN’s Peter Hamby.
