Earlier today, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that he won’t expel American diplomats from Russia in retaliation for the sanctions President Barack Obama imposed on the country in response to the alleged hacking of the election.
Following Putin’s announcement, President-elect Donald Trump took to Twitter to praise Putin, calling it a “great move” and stating he “always knew” Putin “was very smart. Trump apparently felt so strongly about the tweet that he pinned it to the top of his timeline.
As the tweet gained steam in the Twittersphere, it was noteworthy that one of the accounts that retweeted it was the Russian Embassy in the United States.

After Obama imposed the sanctions yesterday, the Russian Embassy in the UK tweeted out criticism of the move, including a meme of a lame duck, referencing Obama’s impending end as POTUS.
Trump released a short statement yesterday in response to the sanctions, saying it was time to move on but also noting that he’ll meet with intelligence leaders next week to discuss their findings. In the wake of the assessment that Russia interfered in the election to assist Trump, the incoming POTUS called the conclusion “ridiculous.”
