San Bernardino Couple’s Former Neighbor Expected to Face Criminal Charges
Enrique Marquez has been under the scrutiny of investigators after being identified as the purchaser of two of the four guns used by Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik. Not only has it been determined that Marquez lied on his purchasing application and gave no official notice of his intent to give the guns to the couple, but he also talked with Farook about committing a terrorist act in 2012.
Marquez has reportedly been cooperating with the FBI after they investigated his house, but NBC noted that he was radicalized alongside Farook years ago. While he says that he was unaware of the couple’s plan for San Bernardino, Marquez also said that his purchase of guns was a favor so that Farook would not have to go through a background check or be the recorded purchaser.
While the specific charges are currently unknown, CNN reported that they are expected to be based off of his gun purchases, and Marquez could face conspiracy to commit a terrorist act or conspiracy to commit murder, both carrying a potential life sentence.
