SC House Candidate Running for Trey Gowdy’s Seat: Transgender People ‘Got an Issue with Mental Illness’
Lee Bright, a state senator from South Carolina hoping to take Trey Gowdy‘s seat in the House, said at a candidate forum on Monday that he thinks transgender people have a mental illness, according to The Greenville News.
“You’re either a man or a woman — and if you’re confused, you’ve got an issue with mental illness,” the Congressional hopeful opined. “If we don’t get right, God is going to judge us, and let me tell you it is going to be painful.”
Big surprise, Bright was also a sponsor on a bill which would ban transgender people from using the bathroom of their choice, instead requiring them to use the bathroom matching the sex assigned to them at birth. The bill failed.
After the forum where Bright made his remarks, a straw poll was taken and of six candidates, Bright came in fourth.
For reference, the candidate who came in last – state senator William Timmons – said during the forum: “We have gone so far from the Bible,” he said. “We don’t even teach it in schools — we ban prayer in schools. But bizarrely, we give prisoners Bibles.”
