Sen. Coons to Fox & Friends: Initial Kavanaugh Probes Found ‘Whiff’ of Evidence on Drinking, Sexual Misconduct Claims

Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) is refuting the notion from Judiciary Committee chairman Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) that initial background investigations into Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh turned up “not a whiff” of evidence into claims of excessive drinking and sexual misconduct.

Appearing on Fox & Friends, the Delaware Senator said he spoke with fellow committee member Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) — one of eight Democratic Senators on the committee to put their name to a letter pushing back Grassley’s claim. After speaking with Durbin, Coons — who originally did not sign the letter — said he believes there was at least some evidence against Kavanaugh in the intial investigations.

“Chairman Grassley…tweeted out last night that..in the previous background investigations there was ‘not a whiff,’ not a whiff of any allegations around drinking or sexual misconduct,” Coons said. “And I believe Senator Durbin, with whom I just spoke, responded, ‘that’s not true.’ We’re now into something that is confidential, and this is a back-and-forth between the majority and minority about something both sides know was in the background investigation that doesn’t clear the standard of ‘not a whiff.'”
