U.S. Sen. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) made headlines this week after his DUI arrest in Alexandria, Va. In an update, it appears that Crapo, a Mormon who’s said he abstains from drinking alcohol, “consumed several shots of vodka” prior to the arrest.
The report comes via court documents obtained by the Del Ray Patch. “The driver indicated that he consumed several shots of vodka hours earlier and did not consume any more alcoholic beverages since,” the officer wrote in the report. Crapo exhibited slurred speech and “bloodshot and watery” eyes.
The senator is charged with driving while intoxicated and disregarding a red light. He had a blood alcohol level of 0.11 (the legal limit being 0.08) and was later released on $1,000 bond. Crapo is slated to appear in Alexandria General District Court on Jan. 4.
He has since apologized for the incident.
“I accept total responsibility and will deal with whatever penalty comes my way in this matter,” Crapo said. “I will also undertake measures to ensure that this circumstance is never repeated.”
