Seth Meyers chided Hillary Clinton for her candor and word choice, saying that she showed poor judgment when she called half of Trump supporters a “basket of deplorables” at a fundraising speech last week.
“What’s the matter, you couldn’t come up with an insult that sound like a richer, whiter lady?” he joked, observing that “basket of deplorables” sounds like a “bargain bin at Nieman Marcus.”
Moreover, he said, she should have known that the news media would spend more time covering her calling out Trump supporters’ racism than actually covering Trump supporters’ racism. “Yeah, Donald Trump called Mexicans ‘rapists’ and has called you and your supporters a hundred different names, but there is a double standard in play in this election,” Meyers said.
“Sure, it’s patently unfair, but you can’t play tit for tat with Donald Trump because the media is only talk about your tats and completely ignore his tits.”
The “basket of deplorables” line was akin to an oral report Meyers claimed he gave in high school in which he insulted a teacher: “I wasn’t wrong, but I just shouldn’t have said it.”
