Snowden in Reddit AMA: I Wish I Had Come Forward Sooner

In a Reddit AMA (“ask me anything”) on Monday, NSA leaker Edward Snowden revealed he wishes he had acted sooner on making the agency’s controversial surveillance programs public.

“Had I come forward a little sooner, these programs would have been a little less entrenched, and those abusing them would have felt a little less familiar with and accustomed to the exercise of those powers,” Snowden wrote. “Once you grant the government some new power or authority, it becomes exponentially more difficult to roll it back.”

At Sunday night’s Oscars, Citizenfour — a film featuring Snowden — won an Academy Award for best documentary. Filmmaker Laura Poitras and journalist Glenn Greenwald participated in the AMA.

While introducing the documentary, Oscars host Neil Patrick Harris joked that Snowden “could not be here tonight for some treason.” In the AMA, Snowden said he actually thought that was pretty funny.
