South Carolina GOP Chair Condemns Ann Coulter’s ‘Despicable’ Attack on Nikki Haley

During her State of the Union response tonight, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley spoke of being welcoming to legal immigrants and rejecting “angry” voices like Donald Trump‘s. That led to an angry tweetstorm from Ann Coulter that included these barbs:

Coulter got some pushback from fellow conservatives, but in an interview with Time Magazine today, Matt Moore––the chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party––fired back by saying, “What Ann Coulter said is despicable.”

He defended her argument that tone and inclusion are important:

“Winning elections is about addition and multiplication. We have to be a party that’s focused on bringing people into the tent to be successful in November. And in doing that, words matter, tone matters, and the way we say things matters. There is nothing wrong with being respectful and polite to people in an attempt to win their vote.”
