Stephanie Ruhle Calls Out Sen. Portman For Florida Tweet: ‘Thoughts, Prayers & $3M in Donations From the NRA’

MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle called out Sen. Rob Portman after the lawmaker tweeted out his condolences to the victims of the high school mass shooting in Florida.

“Heartbreaking news out of Florida,” Portman tweeted. “Jane and I send our prayers to the school, the community, and the victims of this tragedy.”

The Ohio senator’s tweet apparently drew Ruhle’s attention, who responded by calling him out for donations he has received from the NRA.

“Thoughts, prayers & $3mm in donations from the NRA,” she replied.

Expressions of “thoughts and prayers” have become a reoccurring cudgel in the debate on enacting gun control in the wake of mass shootings, with those in support of gun control arguing that condolences are a poor excuse for inaction.

Ruhle’s tweet calling out Portman came after the New York Daily News pointed out that Portman received “$64,877 in campaign donations from gun rights groups during the 2015-2016 campaign cycle,” and “$3,061,941 from the NRA over the course of his career as an elected official.”

19-year-old Nikolaus Cruz opened fire at a high school in Parkland, Florida on Wednesday, leaving 17 dead and more than a dozen injured. Two hours after he began shooting, police apprehended Cruz, who was armed with an AR-15 assault rifle.
