Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan announced the assassination of an Afghan election official on Twitter Wednesday morning.
Mohammad Amanullah, head of the Independent Election Commission in the Kunduz province of Afghanistan, was shot by two gunman who fired while driving by on a motorcycle, and died after arriving at a hospital a short time later.
About an hour following the shooting, a spokesman for the insurgents tweeted, “At 9 a.m. this morning, Engineer Mohammad Aman head of Kunduz Independent Election Commission was killed by our Mujahedeen in Takharistan area of Kunduz city.”
The responses were harsh:
Despite the tweet, authorities did not confirm that the Taliban was behind the shooting, the first attack on a Commission official in over two years.
The Taliban has mocked the 2014 elections as a “waste of time.”
