Tamir Rice’s Mother: City of Cleveland’s Apology ‘Disrespectful’

Cleveland city attorneys wrote in a report about the death of 12-year-old Tamir Rice that Rice’s actions were to blame for his own death. Mayor Frank Jackson apologized yesterday, saying, “In an attempt to protect all of our defenses, we used words and we phrased things in such a way that was very insensitive… So we are apologizing today as a city to the family of Tamir Rice and to the citizens of the city of Cleveland for our poor use of words and our insensitivity in the use of those words.”

But the Rice family isn’t necessarily happy with that apology either. Rice family attorney Benjamin Crump said, “The city had over 30 days to deliberate and articulate its decision on Tamir Rice and they chose the words that they chose.”

Samaria Rice, Rice’s mother was also very displeased with the apology, saying at a news conference this morning, “The city’s answer was very disrespectful to my son Tamir. I have yet––have not received an apology from the police department or the city of Cleveland in regards to the killing of my son and it hurts.”
