The President of the United States Reportedly Asked James Comey to Jail Reporters

Before he was fired by Donald Trump earlier this month, former FBI director James Comey reportedly kept a memo stating that the president asked him to think about putting reporters who published classified leaks under arrest.

The storm between Trump and Comey reached a new level on Tuesday, after the New York Times reported that Comey took personal notes about how Trump asked him to end the federal investigation of Michael Flynn. The memo also states that during the same conversation, Trump said that Comey ought to think about locking up journalists who publish leaked government information.

Per the Times:

Alone in the Oval Office, Mr. Trump began the discussion by condemning leaks to the news media, saying that Mr. Comey should consider putting reporters in prison for publishing classified information, according to one of Mr. Comey’s associates.

The Comey memo became an instant subject of media intrigue, and it has prompted bipartisan questions over whether Trump tried to commit obstruction of justice. The Trump Administration’s displeasure over “fake news” reporters and government leakers is well-established, and the Trump campaign sent out a fundraising email last night blasting those trying to “sabotage” the president.
