So Unpopular It’s ‘The Ted Cruz of Healthcare Legislation’: John Oliver Rips GOP Health Plan
On Sunday’s edition of Last Week Tonight, host John Oliver took a deep dive into a subject on a lot of people’s minds lately: Health care. Specifically, the late night host focused on the GOP replacement for Obamacare, The American Health Care Act.
Oliver was unimpressed.
“Try to think of it as Pirates of the Caribbean 5: The Curse of Johnny Depp Getting Divorced and Needing the Money,” he said.
From there, Oliver launched into an explanation of the bill and the growing consensus from independent experts that, if enacted, millions of people would have their health coverage reduced, or lose it altogether. In particular, he said the GOP proposal of tax credits to allow consumers to buy private insurance were grossly insufficient.
“Those who are lower income would be particularly hurt,” said Oliver.
Ironically, according to one analysis, the income brackets most likely to face negative consequences from the bill were a demographic that overwhelmingly voted for Donald Trump in the 2016 election.
“It’s like if the people of Pompeii voted for the volcano,” quipped Oliver to a round of laughter.
The Obamacare replacement has faced such a strong and growing chorus of criticism that Oliver said it was essentially, “the Ted Cruz of health care legislation.”
The segment ended with a promise to return Oliver’s faux ‘Catheter Cowboy’ to the airwaves Wednesday in a commercial during Fox & Friends to plead with Trump not to reduce his coverage.
