‘They Came to Me as a Surprise’: Qatari Ambassador Reacts to Trump’s Qatar Tweets

CNN welcomed on Qatar Ambassador to the US Meshal bin Hamad Al Thani this evening to discuss both the recent report that Russia was responsible for a fake news story that has caused tension in the Middle East and President Donald Trump’s recent tweets about Qatar.

Just to recap, following a number of Middle East countries cutting diplomatic ties with Qatar over concerns the country was financing terrorism, the president sent out a series of tweets taking credit for the action while accusing the US ally of being a state sponsor of terror.

Speaking to Erin Burnett, the ambassador noted that after he saw the tweets today, he “went through them carefully.” He added that he was confident with the country’s cooperation with the United States before explaining that he was still stunned by the comments.

“We are confident of our efforts to combat terrorism,” he said. “So they came to me as a surprise.” Those comments parroted what he had told The Daily Beast earlier in the day.

Burnett then asked him if he was willing to come out and say the president was wrong. However, the diplomat demurred, reiterating Qatar’s cooperation with the US.
