Tina Turner is saying goodbye to America and hello to Switzerland. The iconic pop diva has been living in a suburb of Zurich since 1995. But today, a Swiss paper reported that she has been officially granted Swiss citizenship.
“I’m very happy in Switzerland and I feel at home here…. I cannot imagine a better place to live,” Turner said. A spokesperson for the singer clarified that she will be giving up her U.S. citizenship.
The mayor of the small town in Tennessee where Turner was born expressed “surprise” when told of the singer’s decision to give up her U.S. passport. “I think anytime a person, whether they’re world-renowned or the most meek and mild, makes the decision to change their citizenship,” Mayor Jo Matherne said, “we need to step back and think what causes that decision.”
