The View host Jenny McCarthy has long said she thought vaccinations may have caused her son’s autism, a supposition that has been thoroughly debunked by the scientific community. Singer Toni Braxton also has a young son with autism, but she traces the cause to a different source: God. Specifically, she thinks God gave her son autism in retribution for an abortion she had more than a decade earlier.
“I was suddenly faced with a choice I’d never thought I’d have to make,” she writes. “Amid my major misgivings about abortion, I eventually made the gut-wrenching decision.”
“In my heart, I believed I had taken a life—an action that I thought God might one day punish me for,” she continues. “My initial rage was quickly followed by another strong emotion: guilt. I knew I’d taken a life… I believed God’s payback was to give my son autism.”
That being said, Braxton does not totally discount the vaccination theories. “Maybe it’s just a coincidence that after my son’s first MMR vaccine, I began to notice changes in him,” she writes later in the book, addressing the controversial topic championed by celebrities like McCarthy and others.
