Tracy Morgan and Whoopi Goldberg Hilariously Skewer Diversity in 2016 Film Parody Montage
Keeping with the theme of jeering the #OscarSoWhite controversy, host Chris Rock introduced a clip show of scenes from Academy Award-nominated films with black actors inserted into them. “If you’re a black actor just getting the opportunity to be in a movie can be a struggle,” Rock said. “Let’s take a look.”
The montage featured scenes from Joy, The Revenant, The Danish Girl, and The Martian (sort of).
Whoopi Goldberg, playing an irate janitor injected into a scene from Joy, observing Jennifer Lawrence‘s title character, quipped: “Maybe one day they’ll make a movie about a skinny white girl who invents a mop. Of course a black girl would have to invent a cure to cancer before they even give her a TV movie.”
In one clip, Jeff Daniels and Kristen Wiig reprised their roles from The Martian as NASA officials while Rock assumed Matt Damon‘s role of the stranded astronaut. The scenario plays out slightly differently in this re-imagining: “I’ll tell you what’s a PR problem,” Daniels said, “spending 2500 white dollars to save one black astronaut.”
