Trump Bashes Media, Claims He Didn’t Fire Comey Because of Russia in Frenzied Tweets

President Donald Trump, amidst a frenzied spurt of tweets Thursday morning, issued one in which he rejected allegations he fired former FBI director James Comey because of the Russia investigation, which remains a core pillar of the argument he obstructed justice.

“Not that it matters but I never fired James Comey because of Russia!” Trump tweeted. “The Corrupt Mainstream Media loves to keep pushing that narrative, but they know it is not true!”

Though the administration first claimed the firing of Comey was because of the FBI director’s handling of the Clinton email investigation, Trump later said in an interview it had to do with the investigation into his own campaign’s ties to Russia.

Trump told NBC’s Lester Holt in May 2017: “And in fact when I decided to just do it, I said to myself, I said ‘you know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made-up story, it’s an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should have won’.”

Trump later told Russian officials in the Oval Office the firing of Comey eased pressure on him from the Russia probe.

“I just fired the head of the F.B.I. He was crazy, a real nut job,” Trump told the Russians. “I faced great pressure because of Russia. That’s taken off.”

In another tweet issued Thursday, Trump accused the media of doing its best not to cover news that the FBI sent an informant to speak to members of his campaign about their Russia ties.

The FBI maintains this counter-intelligence operation was above board, but Trump and his allies have sought to cast it as a nefarious plot by the Obama administration to undermine his campaign and elect Hillary Clinton (how they were unable to do so remains unexplained.)

“The corrupt Mainstream Media is working overtime not to mention the infiltration of people, Spies (Informants), into my campaign!” Trump tweeted, adding a Michael Scottian touch: “Surveillance much?”

It’s a bizarre claim from Trump. As it has been documented, the media has been granting wall-to-wall coverage to the FBI informant and Trump’s claims that he was a politically motivated spy.
