Trump Campaign Falsely Attributed Anti-Cruz Attack to a Former GOP Senator

Donald Trump really wants to hammer home his point that Ted Cruz is incredibly dishonest, and he attempted to prove it today by engaging in, well, incredible dishonesty.

Trump social media director Dan Scavino tweeted out a link to what he billed as former Republican Senator Tom Coburn slamming Cruz, and Trump RT’d him:

There’s just one problem. The quote did not come from Corbun. It came from the progressive blogger who wrote about Coburn. And while there are links within to actual moments where Coburn criticized Cruz, Team Trump ended up going with one he never said, probably because it was snazzier.

Well, when Coburn got wind of this, he told The Washington Examiner he wasn’t happy:

“It’s an absolute fabrication. I’ve never said that, period,” Coburn told the Examiner. “It’s unfortunate he would use my name to say something dishonest. It’s a total fabrication.”

“To me, it’s more of loose play with the truth and loose play with the words,” Coburn said.

Probably not the best strategy to be so loose with the fact-checking when you’re trying to accuse someone else of dishonesty…
