President Donald Trump has congratulated Emmanuel Macron on his victory in the French presidential election:
Congratulations to Emmanuel Macron on his big win today as the next President of France. I look very much forward to working with him!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 7, 2017
Early projections show Macron easily beating Marine Le Pen, and it’s worth noting here that while Trump did not expressly endorse Le Pen, he did have positive things to say.
While the following tweet may have only indirectly referenced Le Pen…
Another terrorist attack in Paris. The people of France will not take much more of this. Will have a big effect on presidential election!

…a subsequent interview Trump did made things much clearer:
President Donald Trump says he believes Thursday’s attack in Paris will “probably help” far-right candidate Marine Le Pen in France’s upcoming election… because she’s the candidate who is “strongest on borders, and she’s the strongest on what’s been going on in France.”
Meanwhile, Donald Tusk, the President of the European Council, has reacted to the French election by congratulating Emmanuel Macron and the people of France for rejecting the “tyranny of fake news”:
Congratulations @EmmanuelMacron. Congratulations to French people for choosing Liberty, Equality and Fraternity over tyranny of fake news.
