Impeachment chatter appears to be heating up among Congressional Democrats — with a second member of the House now explicitly calling for the President to be impeached.
Al Green, a Democrat who represents the ninth district in Texas, released a statement calling for President Donald Trump to be impeached.
“President Trump is not above the law,” Green said in a statement. “He has committed an impeachable act and must be charged. To do otherwise would cause some Americans to lose respect for, and obedience to, our societal norms.”
The alleged act to which Green is referring is “obstruction of a lawful investigation of the President’s campaign ties to Russian influence in his 2016 Presidential Election.” Green believes that Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey, as well as his subsequent admission that he considered the Russia investigation while dismissing Comey, constitutes an act of obstruction.
Green becomes the second Democratic member of Congress to call for Trump’s impeachment following Maxine Waters — who has mentioned impeachment for months.
According to CNN, Green and Waters are the only two members of either chamber to call for Trump’s impeachment. However, a number of others have discussed the possibility, including Senator Richard Blumenthal, Congressman Keith Ellison, and Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard.
